“To Kill A Mockingbird” With candid Scout as our guide, we take a look at a small town in Alabama in 1935, as a hard-working black man is falsely accused of a heinous crime, and another neighborhood outcast becomes an unexpected hero. Together, we follow Scout’s attorney father, Atticus, as he endeavors to defend Tom Robinson and to protect himself and his family from the dangerous foes who want him to fail.
This beautiful adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel challenges us to balance accountability with understanding. Through the course of the play, Scout is forced to mature beyond the clear morality of her youth in order to grapple with the serious injustices around her. But empathy is hardest in the face of extreme wrongs, and as an audience, we may find it difficult to forgive many of the inhabitants of this Alabama town. We must ask ourselves, as Atticus does, why when people hurt each other again and again, “only children weep”, and even adults often forget to walk around in someone else’s shoes.
This production uses strong language and addresses serious themes.
It is intended for mature audiences.
